“...the one who leads, with zeal...”
Most see the “one who leads” speaking of an administrative gift. The Greek sees this gift so influencing others it causes them to follow a recommended course of action. This is an influential gift with a following. It only stands to reason that the one with this gift be zealous and not lazy.
If leadership is truly influence this gift should not be limited to Pastors or Elders. Years ago I was offered an opportunity to minister in South Africa. As I was speaking I was drawn to a young man. I sensed he was a leader but could not decide if he was serving the Lord. Unable to get my mind off of him I prophesied the leadership gift on his life. I told him he would lead whether he was serving God or not because of the influence he had.
So many fail to realize how much of an influence they truly are. I am convinced we are responsible before God for the influence we have. Sad to say there are lazy leaders. I believe these are the most confusing because they do not point anyone anywhere with any consistency. The most dangerous leaders are bitter ones because bitterness has the potential to defile many (Hebrews 12:15). Exodus 15 records how bitterness had to be dealt with before the people could journey on and come to Elim where there 12 springs of water and 70 palm trees. 12 and 70 are numbers representing leadership because there were 12 disciples and 70 elders. We cannot have bitter leaders.
Here are three questions to ponder in your heart:
-Is there a chance you are bitter? Will you forgive so you can continue in your walk with Jesus?
-Are there people that have been defiled by your bitterness? Will you go to them and walk them through forgiveness?
-How will you protect your heart from future bitterness? What steps and accountability will you have in place to secure this?
